Here's how to make a classic snow globe:

Materials:

  • Glass jar with a lid (Mason jars work well)
  • Waterproof miniature figurine(s) - Choose something that reflects your interests or the scene you want to create inside the globe
  • Distilled water (important, tap water can promote mold growth)
  • Clear craft glue
  • Glycerin (optional, but recommended)
  • Glitter (various colors are fun!)
  • Decorations for the lid (optional) - ribbon, paint, seashells, etc.

Instructions:

  1. Clean and dry the jar: Make sure the inside of the jar is completely clean and dry. Any remaining moisture can cloud the water and hinder visibility.

  2. Attach the figurine to the lid: Apply a small amount of clear craft glue to the bottom of your figurine and secure it firmly to the inside center of the lid. Let the glue dry completely, following the drying time instructions on the glue bottle.

  3. Prepare the water mixture (optional - add glycerin): In a separate container, mix distilled water with a few drops of glycerin (usually 1/2 teaspoon to 1 teaspoon per jar). Glycerin helps slow down the falling glitter, creating a more snow-like effect.

  4. Fill the jar with the water mixture: Carefully pour the water mixture into the jar, leaving some space at the top (about 1/2 inch) to prevent overflow when you screw on the lid.

  5. Add glitter: With the jar standing upright, sprinkle your choice of glitter into the water mixture. You can experiment with different colors or a combination for a festive look.

  6. Seal the lid: Once you're happy with the amount of glitter, carefully wipe the rim of the jar to remove any excess water or glitter. Screw on the lid firmly to create a watertight seal.

Optional: Decorate the lid:

You can get creative and personalize your snow globe by decorating the outside of the lid. Here are some ideas:

  • Wrap a ribbon around the rim of the lid and tie a bow on top.
  • Paint the lid a solid color or add a small design.
  • Glue miniature decorations around the base of the figurine inside the lid, like seashells for an ocean scene.

Enjoy your snow globe!

Tips:

  • Use waterproof figurines specifically designed for snow globes to avoid any paint flaking or color bleeding.
  • If you don't have glycerin, you can still make a snow globe, but the glitter will fall faster.
  • For a more secure seal, you can apply a thin layer of clear craft glue around the rim of the jar lid before screwing it on.
  • Let the snow globe settle for a few hours before shaking it up for the first time.

Have fun creating your own winter wonderland in a jar!
