Spam musubi is a popular Hawaiian snack made with grilled or pan-fried Spam, rice, and nori (seaweed). Here's a simple recipe to make spam musubi at home:
Ingredients:
- 1 can of Spam (12 oz)
- 2 cups of sushi rice
- 4 sheets of nori (seaweed)
- Soy sauce
- Sugar
- Furikake seasoning (optional)
- Musubi mold (optional, but makes shaping easier)
Instructions:
1. Cook the Rice: Rinse the sushi rice under cold water until the water runs clear. Cook the rice according to the package instructions or using a rice cooker. Once cooked, let the rice cool slightly.
2. Prepare the Spam: Slice the Spam into rectangular slices, about 1/4 to 1/2 inch thick. In a small bowl, mix together a marinade of soy sauce and a little sugar. You can also add other seasonings like garlic powder or black pepper if desired. Marinate the Spam slices in the mixture for about 15-30 minutes.
3. Cook the Spam: Heat a skillet or grill pan over medium heat. Add the marinated Spam slices and cook for 2-3 minutes on each side, or until lightly browned and crispy on the edges. Remove from heat and set aside.
4. Shape the Musubi: Place a sheet of nori on a clean surface. If you're using a musubi mold, place it on top of the nori. Fill the mold with a layer of cooked rice, pressing it down firmly to pack it together. If you don't have a mold, you can shape the rice into rectangles using your hands.
5. Add the Spam: Place a slice of cooked Spam on top of the rice in each musubi mold. If desired, sprinkle a little furikake seasoning over the Spam for added flavor.
6. Wrap with Nori: Fold the sides of the nori over the top of the Spam and rice, wrapping it tightly to form a rectangular-shaped package. Wet the edge of the nori with a little water to seal it closed.
7. Slice and Serve: Use a sharp knife to slice the musubi into individual pieces, cutting through the nori and Spam. Serve the spam musubi as a snack or light meal.
Enjoy your homemade spam musubi! You can customize the recipe by adding ingredients like avocado, teriyaki sauce, or pickled vegetables to suit your taste preferences.
